Swordfish House is a contemporary waterfront residence that reinterprets the architectural language of Palm Beach through a considered response to site, climate and local character. Composed as a series of interconnected forms, the two-storey dwelling is defined by two upper-level pavilions that sit lightly above a grounded masonry base, creating a layered composition of scale, shadow and enclosure.

The architecture draws from the coastal vernacular that once defined the Palm Beach foreshore. Retaining the existing entry courtyard and preserving significant mature trees, the design establishes continuity with the site’s history while offering a contemporary interpretation of the traditional beach shack. Fibre cement cladding with expressed cover battens, custom brickwork, exposed timber rafters and finely detailed timber screening create a rich yet restrained material palette, while subtle pastel tones reference the character of historic coastal dwellings.

Deep eaves, operable screening and generous openings respond to climate by mediating solar access, promoting natural ventilation and framing views across the canal and hinterland beyond. Primary living spaces extend seamlessly to a sheltered waterfront terrace with pool, spa, sauna and private pontoon, reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape.

A self-contained western pavilion provides flexibility for guests, multigenerational living or a home office, while the upper-level master retreat occupies a privileged position overlooking the water. Through its response to context, materiality and climate, Swordfish House reinforces the evolving identity of Palm Beach while creating an enduring and highly liveable family home.
