With the demolition of the 30 year old Donto Sapporo restaurant at Broadbeach, BDA were engaged to design and document the new Japanese restaurant which is located at Sorrento Shopping Village.

The new restaurant which is 110m2 in area was to reflect the traditional Japanese architectural character of the old restaurant. The application of timber, white paper screens, dark flooring, small profile tiles and timber furniture were the request of the client. This traditional material palette in conjunction with the re-use of the existing furniture, equipment, lanterns and signage payed homage to the recently demolished restaurant.

The small tenancy area required a strategic approach to the spatial planning, in particular maximising the seating capacity with bench seating with cushions, central feature table with feature lighting and a few smaller scatted tables. The sushi bar and bar were key feature elements which were highlighted with the choice of material and the scale of the bars. Overall, the Japanese restaurant creates an atmosphere which focuses on the food and dining internal experience.
